Standard Vicat Apparatus with 10 mm Plunger
Calibrated 300 g plunger assembly with polished 10.00 mm diameter stainless steel cylindrical probe.
Determine the standard (normal) consistency water percentage (P_w) of hydraulic cement paste using the Vicat plunger apparatus according to ASTM C187 / BS EN 196-3. Explore interactive structural mechanics, materials simulation, and civil engineering telemetry.
Ready to sample with Water % = 28.0 %.
Adjust Water %, then execute civil engineering measurement.
Civil engineering telemetry is evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity structural mechanics and geotechnical continuum modeling.
The civil engineering physical models apply within the specified calibrated operational window (24.0 to 34.0 %). Evaluated using standard Type I Portland cement. Normal consistency target P_w = 28.125% corresponds to standard 20 mm penetration in 40 mm mold. Linearized regression slope = 3.2000 mm/%.
Calibrated 300 g plunger assembly with polished 10.00 mm diameter stainless steel cylindrical probe.
Standard mold: 70 mm top opening, 80 mm bottom opening, 40 mm height mounted on flat glass plate.
Electrically driven planetary mixer (ASTM C305) with paddle speeds of 140 ± 5 and 285 ± 10 rpm.
Measures distilled water volume to 0.1 mL and cement powder to 0.1 g.
Used for rapid mold filling, packing, and strike-off without imparting vibration.
Maintains laboratory air at 20.0 ± 2.0 °C and relative humidity ≥ 50%.
Determine the standard (normal) consistency water percentage (P_w) of hydraulic cement paste using the Vicat plunger apparatus according to ASTM C187 / BS EN 196-3. Standardized parameter settings: 24.0, 26.0, 28.0, 30.0, 32.0, 34.0 %.
Weigh 650 g of dry cement to 0.1 g; calculate water mass for initial trial percentage (e.g. 26.0% = 169.0 g); measure distilled water into mixing bowl.
Add cement to water; let absorb for 30 s; mix at low speed (140 rpm) for 30 s; stop mixer for 15 s to scrape down bowl; mix at medium speed (285 rpm) for 60 s according to ASTM C305.
Form paste into a ball with gloved hands; toss six times between hands spaced 150 mm apart; press ball into large end of conical mold; slice off excess flush with glass plate; invert and slice top flush.
Center mold under the 10 mm Vicat plunger; bring plunger gently into contact with paste top surface; tighten set screw and set indicator scale to zero.
Release plunger set screw smoothly; allow plunger to settle for exactly 30 seconds under its own self-weight; read penetration depth P on graduated scale.
Repeat procedure with fresh cement batches at varying water contents (24%, 26%, 28%, 30%, 32%, 34%) to plot penetration curve and determine P_w for 10 ± 1 mm penetration.
Points are your recorded observations. The solid regression line validates Normal Consistency of Cement mathematical scaling.

Every physical and chemical test performed on neat cement paste—including setting time (ASTM C191) and soundness (ASTM C151 / BS EN 196-3)—requires the paste to be prepared at a precisely standardized moisture condition termed the Normal Consistency (Standard Consistency, P_w). Because different cement clinkers possess varying mineralogical compositions, finenesses (Blaine specific surface area), and gypsum contents, equal water additions do not produce equivalent rheological states across different cements. Standard consistency is defined under ASTM C187 as that specific water content (expressed as a percentage by weight of dry cement) which allows a 10.0 mm diameter polished cylindrical steel plunger under a 300 g moving mass to penetrate to a depth of 10 ± 1 mm below the original paste surface in 30 seconds (measured 33 to 35 mm from the bottom glass plate of a 40 mm mold). Finding this exact water content requires preparing trial batches of cement paste with water contents varying systematically between 24% and 34%, measuring plunger penetration depth, and interpolating the standard moisture percentage. In this laboratory, trial cement pastes are tested to establish the consistency penetration gradient and determine the normal consistency P_w.
