Measure vertical depth of penetration of a standard 100 g loaded steel needle into bituminous asphalt binder at 25°C over 5 seconds to classify paving bitumen grade (e.g., 60/70, 80/100) according to ASTM D5 / EN 1426. Explore interactive structural mechanics, materials simulation, and civil engineering telemetry.
Ready to sample with Temperature T = 25.0 °C.
Adjust Temperature T, then execute civil engineering measurement.
Civil engineering telemetry is evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity structural mechanics and geotechnical continuum modeling.
The civil engineering physical models apply within the specified calibrated operational window (20.0 to 35.0 °C). Tested on standard paving-grade bitumen (Grade 60/70). Linearized thermal response correlates needle penetration to bath temperature with slope 3.8000 dmm/°C (Pen = 70.0 dmm at standard 25.0 °C).

Submerged immersion bath regulating temperature to 25.0 ± 0.1 °C with magnetic circulation.
Seamless brass/aluminum cup (55 mm diameter, 35 mm internal depth) containing 50 g bitumen.
Enables transfer of sample from water bath to penetrometer stage while completely submerged in 25 °C water.
Measure vertical depth of penetration of a standard 100 g loaded steel needle into bituminous asphalt binder at 25°C over 5 seconds to classify paving bitumen grade (e.g., 60/70, 80/100) according to ASTM D5 / EN 1426. Standardized parameter settings: 20.0, 23.0, 26.0, 29.0, 32.0, 35.0 °C.
Heat bulk bitumen sample in oven at 140 °C until fluid; stir gently to homogenize without entraining air bubbles; pour into test container to depth ≥ 30 mm; cover with beaker to protect from dust.
Cool specimen in air at room temperature for 1.5 hours; transfer into thermostatic circulating water bath at target temperature (e.g. 25.0 ± 0.1 °C); condition for exactly 1.5 hours.
Place sample into transfer dish filled with water from bath; position on penetrometer stage; clean needle with toluene; mount needle and attach 50 g weight to make 100.0 g total load.
Using micrometer adjustment screw and mirror light reflection, lower needle until its sharp tip just makes contact with the bitumen surface without indentation; zero digital dial gauge.
Press start trigger; the automatic timer releases the needle assembly for exactly 5.0 seconds and clamps it; record penetration depth in decimillimeters (dmm).
Repeat determinations at three points spaced ≥ 10 mm from cup edge and each other; calculate mean penetration; repeat across temperatures from 20.0 to 35.0 °C to plot thermal susceptibility.
Points are your recorded observations. The solid regression line validates Bitumen Needle Penetration mathematical scaling.

In civil highway materials engineering and flexible pavement design, petroleum asphalt bitumen is the colloidal thermoplastic binder binding mineral aggregates into cohesive pavements. As a viscoelastic material derived from crude oil vacuum distillation residues, bitumen exhibits strong temperature susceptibility: it behaves as an elastic glass-like solid at freezing temperatures, a viscoelastic ductile solid at ambient temperatures, and a Newtonian fluid at elevated mixing temperatures (140 to 160 °C). The Standard Penetration Test (ASTM D5 / EN 1426) is the historical and foundational consistency test used worldwide to classify paving bitumen into standardized penetration grades (such as 40/50, 60/70, and 80/100). The test measures the distance in decimillimeters (1 dmm = 0.1 mm) that a standard polished stainless steel needle (100.0 g total moving assembly mass, 1.00 to 1.02 mm diameter, 3.2° tapered conical tip) penetrates vertically into a bitumen sample maintained in a thermostatic water bath at 25.0 ± 0.1 °C over exactly 5.0 ± 0.1 seconds. A softer bitumen permits deeper penetration (higher dmm), suitable for cold climatic regions to prevent thermal fracture; a harder bitumen yields lower penetration (e.g. 40/50 grade), specified for hot desert climates to resist heavy truck wheel rutting. In this laboratory experiment, penetration depth is evaluated across water bath temperatures from 20.0 to 35.0 °C to quantify thermal susceptibility slope = 3.8000 dmm/°C and classify 60/70 penetration grade binder (Pen = 70.0 dmm at 25 °C).
