Chemical and process engineering telemetry is evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity transport phenomena and unit operations modeling.

Process engineering assumptions and boundary condition limits

The transport and thermodynamic models apply within the specified calibrated operating window (8.0 to 48.0 L/min). Configured with a 38.1 mm (1.5-inch) pipe and orifice bore d = 19.05 mm (diameter ratio β = 0.50). Pressure measured via flange taps 25.4 mm upstream and downstream of plate face. Linear regression relates sqrt(ΔP) directly to volumetric flow rate Q.

THEORY AND UNIT OPERATIONS CONTEXT

Process engineering background & physical principles.

In chemical process manufacturing, square-edged concentric orifice meters are the most prevalent differential pressure primary elements owing to their mechanical simplicity, rigorous standardization (ISO 5167 / ASME MFC-3M), and low manufacturing cost. An orifice plate consists of a thin metal disc with a precision sharp upstream edge installed perpendicularly across a conduit. As fluid approaches the restriction, streamlines converge beyond the physical orifice opening to form a minimum cross-sectional area termed the vena contracta, where flow velocity peaks and static wall pressure plummets to a minimum. Unlike the guided contour of a Venturi meter, the jet exiting the orifice expands abruptly into the downstream pipe, generating intense turbulent recirculating eddies that dissipate a substantial fraction of kinetic energy into irreversible viscous thermal friction. Consequently, the discharge coefficient C_d of a sharp-edged orifice plate is significantly lower (typically 0.60 to 0.62), and permanent pressure loss accounts for 60% to 75% of measured differential head. In this experiment, flange tapping pressure differences are monitored across an orifice plate to establish calibration sensitivity S, verify square-root scaling, and calculate discharge coefficient C_d.
