MEASURED BULK GRAIN MASS M_B—
FIELD & TEST CELL TELEMETRY

Ready to sample with Volume V_b = 260.0 mL.

260.0 mL
Test grain: Hard red winter wheat

Adjust Volume V_b, then execute agricultural trial.

Agricultural engineering telemetry and biosystems states are evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity agricultural and environmental modeling.

Agricultural assumptions and boundary condition limits

Laboratory small-cylinder bulk densities are slightly lower than deep silo densities where thousands of tons of overburden compact the grain. Evaluated using clean seed wheat at 12.5% moisture (true kernel density ρ_t = 1.340 g/mL, porosity ε = 41.4%) across standardized graduated cylinders.

FOLLOW THE METHOD

A reason behind every step.

Determine the true density, bulk density, porosity, thousand-grain mass, and sphericity of cereal grains and verify the linear mass-volume relation in bulk storage. Standardized parameter settings: 100.0, 180.0, 260.0, 340.0, 420.0, 500.0 mL.

01

Funnel Hopper Standardization

Position the standard filling funnel 5.0 cm above the graduated cylinder, ensuring the discharge shutter is centered and level.

02

Initial 100 mL Bulk Filling

Pour wheat into the funnel, open the shutter to allow free-fall filling into the 100 mL cylinder until overflowing, and strike off excess grain level with the rim using a wooden straightedge.

03

Bulk Mass Determination

Weigh the filled cylinder, subtract tare mass, and record bulk grain mass m_b (g) for V_b = 100.0 mL.

04

Volume Incrementation

Repeat standardized filling across cylinders of 180, 260, 340, 420, and 500 mL, recording mass m_b for each volume.

05

True Density & Porosity Determination

Place 50 g of wheat into the helium pycnometer to measure true volume and calculate true density ρ_t, then compute porosity ε = (1 - ρ_b / ρ_t) × 100%.

06

Linear Bulk Density Regression

Plot bulk mass m_b versus volume V_b, perform linear regression through the origin, and determine the bulk density slope ρ_b.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Explain what the agricultural metrics mean.

If a grain sample has bulk density ρ_b = 0.785 g/cm³ and true density ρ_t = 1.340 g/cm³, what is its porosity?

What happens to the measured bulk density if an operator taps and shakes the measuring cylinder during filling?

What is the standard volume of a Winchester bushel?

If bulk density is 0.785 g/mL, what is the mass of 400 mL of wheat?
